FIRST APPEARANCE IN FRANCE OF AN EXCERPT FROM QUIJOTE IN SPANISH MEDRANO (Julian de), Cavallero Navarro. LA SILVA CURIOSA n que se tratan diversas cosas sotilissimas y curiosas, muy convenientes para Damas y Cavalleros, en toda conversacion virtuosa y honesta. Vendese en Paris, En casa de Marc Orry, 1608. One volume in-8 (8 ff, 328 pp) full tawny glazed calf, ribbed spine decorated with gilded Maltese crosses and motifs, garnet morocco title-piece, framed with cold fillets on the boards, gilded arms in the center (18th century binding). A good, slightly warped copy. Second edition of the Silva Curiosa (miscellanies of proverbs, epitaphs, poems, bon mots and tales) which appeared in Paris in 1583, but without the extract from Don Quixote published in 1605! This new edition was corrected by César Oudin, the first translator of Le Quichotte into French (1614). Following the Silva Curiosa (pp. 274-328), he published chapters 33, 34 and 35 of the new edition entitled "El Curioso Impertinente". This is the first appearance in France (Paris) of a passage from Le Quijote in Spanish, only three years after the publication of the editio princeps. pp. 57-58 redacted.
