ORIGINAL EDITION OF FILLEAU DE SAINT-MARTIN'S TRANSLATION
[CERVANTES SAAVEDRA (Miguel de). HISTOIRE DE L'ADMIRABLE DON QUICHOTTE DE LA MANCHE.
Paris, Claude Barbin, 1679-1678.
Four volumes in four volumes in-12 (6 ff, 518 pp // 1 f, 523 pp (actually 533) and 2 ff // 4 ff, 567 pp // 628 pp and 3 ff. ), full tawny calf, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (contemporary binding). A very good copy, despite a few dull corners and restored headpieces; spines cracked in volume 4.
Extremely rare first edition of Filleau de Saint-Martin's translation (volumes 2, 3, 4 dated 1678; the first dated MDCLXXVIX (sic for 1679) is a second edition. This curious date for the first volume is nowhere to be found!
Volume V (absent here) of the continuation did not appear until 1695, and is said to be by Robert Challes. It is included with the 1695 edition (cf. BNF copy).
Henrich, 246.
Finally, it should be noted that, due to the success of this text and its notoriety from the seventeenth century onwards, this edition remained anonymous!
