CERVANTES / FLORIAN. DON QUICHOTTE DE LA MANCHE.
Paris, Deterville, De l'Imprimerie de P. Didot l'ainé, An VII [1799].
Six volumes in three in-18 volumes (2 ff, 230 pp, 4 plates // 2 ff, 232 pp, 4 plates // 2 ff, 276 pp, 4 plates // 2 ff, 253 pp, 5 plates // 2 ff, 248 pp, 3 plates // 232 pp, 4 plates), green half calf, finely decorated smooth spines, slightly sunned, edges mottled (Romantic bindings). A fine copy, with the engravings protected by serpents.
Second edition published the same year as the in-8 edition, with the same engravings by Lefevre and Lebardier, engraved by Masquelier, Coiny, Halbou, Godefroy, Gaucher and Dambrun.
The printing is very careful and worthy of Didot l'Ainé.
As for Florian's new translation, it's a very free adaptation that skirts around the difficulties and often abbreviates. This is more Florian's Quixote than Cervantes'.
