FLORIAN. DON QUICHOTTE.
Paris, Victor Lecou, 1845.
Two volumes in two volumes, large in-12, midnight-blue half-maroquin with corners, smooth spines decorated with rocaille, dates at foot, mottled edges.
Front. 232 pp. // front. 219 pp.
Romantic reprint of Florian's 1799 translation. This edition is illustrated with 16 steel engravings by Tony Johannot. Some spotting on the plates.
Curiously, the name of the translator replaces that of the author on the title leaf and on the title page. Perhaps because Florian has revisited the text with "the boldness of having abridged a book I admire", as he admits in his preface.
Bookplate of Dr. Drouhet
The same year, 1845, also saw the publication of translations by Viardot, Lejeune, Filleau de Saint-Martin and comparative translations, a sign of continuing interest in the work.
Palau, 52810; Rius does not mention it.
A very good copy.
