Kezban Arca Batıbeki is a Turkish artist, graphic designer, photographer and director of short films.Kezban Arca Batıbeki is a polyhedric artist. She mainly focuses on how women are perceived in contemporary societies with a special consideration on the situation of women in Turkey. She is also interested on themes such as politics, censorship, sexuality and eroticism, which are often analysed with a deep, witty and at times humoristic approach. In her works, she often investigates also popular culture and the concepts of kitsch and subculture. In order to do that, and being a collector herself, she seeks out and uses old family photographs and dated magazines, old-fashioned clothes and vintage furniture. In ‘Stairs’ a woman has killed or just discovered the corpse of another woman, who is lying at the base of the staircase with a knife near her hand. The scene takes place inside a luxurious palace or hotel and leaves the viewer dumbfounded. Actively involving the viewer is one of the most important elements in Batıbeki’s artistic process.
