In 2006, he left Iraq and has been living in Canada since 2011. In 2021, the American writer and journalist Bathsheba Monk dedicated a monograph to his life and work, entitled ‘Fuad Hamdi: 21st Century’.Fuad Hamdi is a prolific artist, who has experimented in his long career with both painting and sculpture. In his production, the recurring depiction of human beings is sometimes replaced by the representation of animals, as in the case of this work that depicts what appears to be a goat, set in a completely empty background, emphasised however by an intense pink colour. The animal is depicted lying down, probably with its legs tied, waiting to be killed or sacrificed. Although in this canvas Hamdi seems to have moved away from analysing the human condition, the goat waiting to be killed is a metaphor for the political situation in which many people in Iraq as well as in many other countries in the Middle East and around the world are forced to live.
