Fahar al-Salih was born in Belgrade in 1964 to an Iraqi father and Serbian mother and grew up in Kuwait before moving first to Vienna and then to Germany. He currently lives and works between Karlsruhe and Baghdad. In 2009 he started painting different types of huts on canvas and called the series ‘Shelter’. The idea of placing the hut, or a simple building, at the centre of a series was suggested to the artist by his personal experiences. During his childhood, he had the opportunity to visit countries where the mountain landscapes were dotted with shelters, which left a strong impression on him. At the same time, the artist and his family lived in different countries, and the feeling of not having a permanent physical place that could be called home led him to feel like a nomad, a person who could find protection anywhere and in anyone. In ‘To die for you’ and the other abstract works in the series, the artist uses thick brushstrokes of colour and human presence is not admitted.
