Trench lookout helmet, Saint-Chamond model
Crude cast-iron, paint remains, cap missing, orange peel in places, oxidation, impact marks (?) on top
First World War
This extremely rare helmet, inspired by the 1846 Pot-en-Tête, was intended to be used by lookouts as they climbed to the top of the trench. Uncomfortable and ineffective, it was only used in a few sectors of the front and was soon abandoned.
