In the preface to the 1955 sale catalog of Zölt's studio, André Breton, in awe of Zölt's work, wrote: "In the absence of any other bibliographical details concerning A. Zölt, one can only dream very freely of what may condition the enterprise - a veritable feast of patience - of this dyer from Upper Austria, who, from 1832 to 1887, put such zeal into creating the most sumptuous bestiary ever seen.
