A BLACK-GROUND THANGKA DEPICTING MARICI, 19TH-20TH CENTURY
Nepal. Distemper and gold on cloth. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame. The fierce, three-headed goddess of the dawn in a dancing pose atop a lotus pedestal, holding various implements in her fourteen hands, dressed in a tiger-skin dhoti and billowing scarves, richly adorned with fine jewelry. She is surrounded by female wrathful and peaceful deities, centered at the top by Buddha Shakyamuni. The reverse is inscribed, ‘Om Ah Hum’.
Condition: Fair condition with some wear, minor fading and losses to pigments, creasing, and soiling. The brocade frame in good condition with wear and some discoloration.
