A LACQUERED WOOD PANEL DEPICTING MAHAKALA, TIBET, 19TH CENTURY
Painted in polychrome lacquer pigments with details in gesso relief. Depicting the fierce head of Mahakala, his mouth open in a snarl, revealing his pointed tongue and sharp fangs framed by his blood-red lips. His eyes furrowed beneath bushy brows; his forehead centered by a third eye beneath a skull tiara securing his flaming hair. The upper right- and left-hand registers painted with entrails suspending a dismembered arm, foot, and eye.
