WANG DEZU (1913-2003): ‘SPARROW AND CHRYSANTHEMUM’, DATED 1938
China, 1998. Ink, watercolors, and gouache on paper. Set inside a vintage frame, behind glass. The playful sparrow perched on a stem issuing from a chrysanthemum bush in full bloom with some insects.
Inscription: The left margin signed ‘Painted by Wang Dezu in Shanghai’, dated ‘In the summer of the Year of Wuyin’ (corresponding to 1938), and inscribed with a poem. One seal.
Provenance: From a German private collection.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and light soiling. The frame with a few nicks.

Wang Dezu (1913-2003), a famous calligraphic and national first-class painter, was the Honorary President of Jiaxing Calligraphy and Painting Society and the Shanghai Qingpu Painting Academy. In 1934, in response to calls from Wu Qingxia, Lu Xiaoman, and Li Qiujun, she participated in the founding of the Chinese Women's Painting Society. Dezu was a follower of Wang Yachen, Zhang Daqian, Pan Tianshou, and Lin Fengmian.
