A LARGE LACQUERED PINK SANDSTONE HEAD OF BUDDHA, AVA STYLE, BURMA, 17TH CENTURY
Superbly sculpted from pink sandstone and covered in a dark reddish-brown lacquer. The sensitively modeled serene face with benevolent eyes, a broad nose, full lips forming a subtle smile, and slender gently arching brows. The hair is smooth, toped by a raised ushnisha, and the earlobes are elongated, extending down to the remnants of the shoulder.
Provenance: From a private collection in Luxembourg, acquired by repute between 1970 and 1980. Luxembourg private collection, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition with wear, losses, signs of weathering and erosion, small nicks here and there, and remnants of gilding.
