A TALL BURMESSE WOOD DRUM, 19TH CENTURY
Burma/ Myanmar, Mandalay period. Standing on a high foot supported on a flat circular base with a leather rim, with ridges around the body and a geometric design at the center, the drum with leather straps.
Condition: Good condition with wear and traces of use, nicks, few natural age cracks, and small chips.
Provenance: Old Belgian private collection. A copy of a signed authentication certificate from Dech Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand, dated 24 March 2014, no. DG032414-3, accompanies this lot.
Dimensions: Height 177 cm
Long-stemmed goblet drums of Myanmar were most popular during the reign of King Mindon (1853–78). This drum is found in a variety of sizes. It is usually suspended either diagonally across the player’s chest or hanging to the left side.
