Japan, Edo period, late 18th-19th century
Lacquered and gilded wood subject representing a Bodhisattva, possibly an esoteric form of Kannon-Avalokiteshvara, with three heads, one of which is wrathful, and eight arms, seated in meditation on a lotus resting on a rock, two of the hands in anjali-mudra, the others holding various attributes. The deity is leaning against a mandorla adorned with stylized clouds, and wearing a metal headdress. On the back of the mandorla, a long dedicatory inscription in red lacquer.
