TWO LATE GOTHIC RELIEF CARVINGS OF THE PASSION OF CHRIST
possibly 16th century
je ca. 69 x 57 cm
The Judas Kiss. Crucifixion of Christ. Two panels made of softwood, the figures in relief possibly linden and worked separately. Partly shortened on the edges. The polychromy later (19th century) and worn with remnants of old polychromy. Damages due to age and restorations.
Property of a Thuringian noble family, formerly Schloß Poschwitz near Altenburg.
The reliefs show strong influences from paintings and graphic works by Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519), among others. The painting "The Kiss of Judas" from the workshop of Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519) was designed for the high altar of the town church in Schwabach (around 1506/1508), the relief panel shows very similar combinations of figures.
