16th century Part of a hanging from the History of Tomyris Woven in wool and silk H: 325 x W: 430 cm €7.000-15.000 Cyrus, eager to expand his empire, is said to have asked for the hand of Tomyris, who had become queen of the Massagetans on the death of her husband the king. The tapestry shows the great Cyrus at Tomyris' feet, proposing marriage and asking for peace, symbolized by the olive branch in his hand. To the right of the tapestry, turbaned men form part of Cyrus' court, while troop movements in the background show that war is possible. In fact, since the Queen has refused this Cyrus will advance his army. A magnificent border frames the composition.
