House altar of the Schiffsleut Brotherhood with St. John Nepomuk and St. Nicholas
Inn Valley, ca. 1740
63 x 35 cm
Pine wood, carved, painted and partly gilded. Depiction of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Nicholas. At the base slightly concave plaque with the depiction of a striped boat, the so-called Innplätte with two oarsmen. Rest. Age damaged
Collection Edmund Löwe, Munich
The depiction in the base shows a traditional barge as it was sailed by shipmen on the Inn, the so-called Innplätte. The type was particularly widespread in the upper Inn valley as far as Tyrol and is also often depicted as a full-sculpture model on processional poles of the brotherhood of shipmen. Cf. John of Nepomuk, exhibition of the Adalbert Stifter Society 1971 on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the beatification of John of Nepomuk, Cat. No. 131 ff.
