Ceremonial food dish Aire Boiken - Mounts
Prince Alexander - Papua New Guinea
Early 19th century
Size: diameter 35 cm
Carved wood
Provenance
Didier Zanette private collection
French private collection
A beautiful circular dish featuring superb engraved decoration. An anthropo-zoomorphic figure presenting two schematized faces, diamond-shaped, with intense expressivity rendered by the particularly meticulous treatment of the eyes. The two faces are linked by the same square body, decorated with curved lines and shapes. A frieze on the median axis, decorated with lozenges and circles, symbolically extends his gestures.
