Kanak comb, New Caledonia
Bamboo
Height: 18 cm
This rare traditional Kanak bamboo comb features a row of four disproportionately long teeth, compared to the small handle adorned with a geometric design engraved with lines and chevrons.
The use of this singular natural material is in keeping with the Kanak tradition of engraved bamboo, used to make a variety of objects: gourds, shelters, boats, musical instruments and combs, as attested by this fine example.
