Pierre Joseph WITDOECK (Antwerp 1803 - Tournai 1889) Recreational games at the Saint Armand College in Kortrijk Canvas 54.5 x 73 cm Signed and dated lower right JP Witdoeck pinxit 1853 Pierre Joseph Witdoeck was an Antwerp painter from a long line of artists, whose father was a professor of architecture at the Royal Academy of Antwerp. It was thanks to him that he developed his talent for drawing. He also studied history painting with Ferdinand de Braekeleer, an important Belgian artist of the 18th-century School. An avid traveler, he visited Algeria, Greece and Italy. His art focuses mainly on historical and religious subjects, but he is also known for his drawings and architectural views.
