Pierre Joseph Witdoeck was an Antwerp painter from a long line of artists, whose father was a professor of architecture at the Royal Academy of Antwerp. It was thanks to him that he developed his talent for drawing. He also studied history painting with Ferdinand de Braekeleer, an important Belgian artist of the 18th-century School. An avid traveler, he visited Algeria, Greece and Italy. His art focuses mainly on historical and religious subjects, but he is also known for his drawings and architectural views.
