A pupil of Jouffroy, Charles-René de Saint-Marceaux made a name for himself at the 1883 Salon with a major marble sculpture of a Harlequin, then again at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, with the same model in bronze. The Harlequin was enthusiastically received by the public, who were surprised by the realistic treatment of the masked face with its sly smile, and the terrace with its theatrical floor. The model's success led to production in six dimensions by the Barbedienne foundry from 1880 onwards.
