The son of a sculptor, Arno Breker entered the Düsseldorf School of Fine Arts in 1919, then moved to Paris in 1925, where he trained with Despiau and admired the work of Maillol. After a stay in Italy, he returned to Germany in 1937. During the Occupation, an exhibition of his work was held at the Orangerie des Tuileries in 1942.
