Davenport. England, last quarter of the 19th century. Root wood. Leather. Metal railing. Measurements: 83 x 54 x 55 cm. English writing desk of the "Davenport" type. The upper area with a slightly inclined desk has space to keep sheets of paper and other elements, and the main body houses drawers inside. The piece of furniture stands on flattened spherical legs and is topped by a brass balustrade. The Davenport is an English piece of 18th-century writing-desk furniture, characterised by its console-shaped structure, with concealed drawers and often side drawers. It always has a sloping front top. Its name derives from the first known model, made by Gillows for Captain Davenport. It was a very comfortable piece of furniture for writing, small in size, and from it a portable model was derived that could be used for writing on campaign or on a ship. Its functionality made it a very popular piece of furniture in the 19th century.
