Francisco Gutiérrez Frechina was born in the Valencian town of Sueca, in the region of the Ribera Baixa. He was the son of a modest family of day laborers. He refused to work in the fields and to work as a llaurador.
At the age of fifteen he began to study at the School of Fine Arts in Valencia. There he received classes from Francisco Paredes García and Luis Marco Pérez. After attending classes, he worked as a model maker, obtaining at the age of twenty the title of professor of drawing and modeling.
In April 1931 he obtained a scholarship in Madrid to study four years in Rome by opposition in the work entitled The Triumph of Life, and also traveled to Athens (1933), Cairo and Damascus. In 1933 he also received another government scholarship to travel to North America and Mexico.
His first exhibition took place in the Sala Abad (Pintor Sorolla Street) in the city of Valencia.
His aesthetic work was of great quality to the point that the sculptor Capuz stated that Frechina was the most outstanding value among current young sculptors.
