[RELIGIOSA] [16TH CENTURY PROTESTANT BIBLE] La Bible qui est toute la Saincte Escriture: contenant le Vieil & et le Nouveau Testament. Autrement, La Vieille & Nouvelle Alliance. De l'imprimerie François Estienne, 1567, the second Protestant Bible printed in Geneva, a magnificent edition with the publisher's distinctive vignette on the title page. The copy is preserved in its fine period binding in vellum with flaps, title in black ink on the spine, a little soiled, first jaw partly split but well preserved overall. A monument to typography, Brunet states "jolie édition imprimée en très petits caractères et ornée de nombreuses figures sur bois finment gravées." The printing of the psalms in the last part is particularly successful and meticulous. Copy complete with John Calvin's epistle to the readers, dated 1553, for the Old Testament, then the apocryphal books, the New Testament with its independent title page, the psalms of David with notated music (version by Clément Marot and Théodore de Bèze), then the manner of administering the sacraments and after the prayers, After the prayers, "le catéchisme c'est à dire le formulaire d'instruire les enfants en la Chrestienté fait en formulaire de dialogue où le ministre interrogue et l'enfant respond" is followed by a title page on "la manière d'interroguer les enfants qu'on recevoir à la cene de nostre seigneur Jésus Christ" and the "Confession de Foy" concluding the work. Some very rare copies may include a historical calendar at the end, which is not present here. In addition to the magnificent in-text woodcuts included in the pagination, this copy also includes a map showing the location of the Garden of Eden, a fold-out genealogical chart (small scotch reinforcement on spine), a fold-out map showing the route taken by the people of Israel during the flight from Egypt (small scotch reinforcement on spine), a fold-out map of the partition of the Channan Land, a fold-out map with a description of the Holy Land (small scotch reinforcement on spine), a map of the countries and places mentioned in the book of Acts (scotch reinforcement on spine). VERY PRETTY EXAMPLE of this rare Bible, a landmark in 16th-century typesetting. Fort in-12, (6) 370pp, 90pp for the apocryphal books, 122pp for the New Testament including 1pp proper title (11pp unpaginated), 82 unpaginated leaves for the last part titled "A tous chrestiens et amateurs de la parolle de Dieu, Salut."
