VOLTAIRE - La Henriade
A Londres, sans mention d'éditeur, 1728 - A fine copy of the first illustrated edition of one of Voltaire's greatest texts, written in honor of King Henri IV and tolerance.
Complete with frontispiece by De Troy engraved by Surugue, title finial designed by Michaux and engraved by Cochin and 10 large figures by De Troy, Lemoine, Vleughels and engraved by Desplaces, Dupuis, Tardieu, Jeaurat, Cochin.
Also with 10 vignettes and 10 culs-de-lampe drawn by Michaux and engraved by Dupuis, Poilly, Fletcher, Lépicié.
Contemporary binding in full calf, 6-rib spine, richly decorated with gilt fleurons, red morocco title-piece, epidermal wear and skilful restoration to corners, head and tail.
One of the very RARE LUXURY EXEMPLAIRES printed entirely on HOLLAND.
A few traces of damp, notably on the first few leaves, but marginal overall.
Among the various editions of this text, "this is the first to have been carefully corrected and revised by Voltaire [...] This fine edition may therefore be considered the first truly authentic" (Le Petit).
"Copies on Hollande paper are extremely rare" (Cohen, 1025).
