[CURIOSA] Louis de CHAVIGNY de la Bretonnière - Sophie ou la veuve Vénitienne By Jean Vander Linden, Leyden, 1682 - First edition of this extremely rare, somewhat licentious work by Chavigny de la Bretonnière, known for his libertine texts and pamphlets, the most famous being Le Cochon Mitré. He died in prison, apparently having gone mad. Although rather light, this text is nonetheless one of the rarest, and very skilfully composed. It was one of the first texts he wrote, and seems to have been inspired by autobiographical elements. A beautifully bound copy by Duru in full mid-19th-century red morocco, triple framed in gilded fillets on the boards, richly ornamented spine with date, title and author, gilded roulettes at the head and tail, gilded edges, gilded lace on the flyleaves. In-16, 156pp. Provenance: Gilt monogram on boards, unidentified (LD?).
