[PROVENANCE] J. E. ALLAIN - Nouvelle grammaire latine synoptique et analytique sur un plan très méthodique
From Rusand et Ponthieu, Paris, 1825 - Interesting provenance for this Latin learning manual by a former university professor. Complete with large fold-out synoptic table, interior in generally good condition, scattered foxing.
A superb copy in full green morocco, double gilt fillets on the boards, 5-ribbed spine with gilt fillets and dotted lines, gilt lace on the counterpanes and silk endpapers, gilt edges, some rubbing not serious, a personal copy of the Duchess of Berry with her cipher stamped on the first board, surmounted by a ducal crown. Also contains the bookplate of the Rosny library, where the Duchess had built up her library.
A moving copy, which we can imagine the duchess using to accompany her reading of the classics when she was learning Latin...
In-8, 5p (2) 235pp
Provenance: Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles (1798-1870) known as the Duchesse de Berry. Mother of the Comte de Chambord, a Legitimist pretender to the French throne, she was notably behind the uprising of 1832.
Another unidentified armorial bookplate is affixed opposite that of the Rosny library.
