[FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION] Victor HUGO - Notre-dame de Paris
Eugène Renduel, Paris, 1836 - A very fine deluxe copy of the first illustrated edition of Victor Hugo's undisputed masterpiece.
Bound in full brown morocco in the purest Romantic style, signed Boutigny on the tail. Large frame of gilded fillets on the boards, simple rocaille plates on the boards and title in gilded letters on the first board. Gilt edges, gilt roulettes at head and tail, smooth spine with gilt ornamentation, slightly unstained but a superb copy overall.
Complete with 11 engraved plates after Johannot, Boulanger, Raffet, Rogier and Rouargue, printed on Chine appliqué.
The illustrations are either on vellum or on Chine appliqué,
The seventh plate, Utilité des fenêtres qui donnent sur la rivière, is missing or has been replaced.
This is a book that is most often heavily pitted" (Clouzot).
This copy, as it happens, has some light freckling and a few traces of light dampening, but is fresh overall.
(Carteret III, 300: "Ce Livre-Keepsake est le modèle du genre").
In-8, 631pp.
