From Ernest Bourdin, Paris, 1839 - A rare first edition copy, lavishly illustrated with 14 steel-engraved plates by Harding, Prout and Bartlett, a woodcut title vignette by Rouargue and several illustrations in the text.
Magnificent cartonnage binding by Boutigny, one of the very few lacquered cartonnage with romantic decorations preserved in such good condition, some very slight rubbing at head and tail, a small wear crack at top of first spine, otherwise excellent condition. Printed on fine cream-colored vellum paper, which does not seem to be the case for the current edition, not mentioned by bibliographers, it is wide-margined and perfectly free of foxing.
