[MILITARY ARCHITECTURE] Louis de CORMONTAIGNE - Architecture militaire ou l'art de fortifier
By Jean Neaulme and Moetjens in The Hague, 1742 - A very fine copy of the first edition of this rare architectural work, which was later largely plagiarized by Bardet de Villeneuve. This work teaches in a short and easy way the construction of all kinds of regular and irregular fortifications; two new systems for building, with much less expense, places with a longer and more advantageous defense than those fortified according to the system of M. le Maréchal de Vauban; and their attacks to know their defense. La construction des chemins-couverts sur toutes sortes de terrains ; avec les devis nécessaires pour celle des fortifications ; et l'art de dessiner et laver les plans. Complete with 40 intaglio folding plates, plus a treatise on the art of war.
Bound in full calf leather, with five-ribbed spine and ornate boxes, red morocco title-piece. The binding has been skilfully restored to the nerves, some of the boxes and the corners.
Barbier N°1272 (2nd edition)
