NOTICE
Jules Salles came from a family of silk merchants. He trained at the École de Dessin de Nîmes, the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes, and then at Paul Delaroche's studio in Paris.
He then traveled to Italy, visiting Rome, Naples and Venice, and began exhibiting his work in Nîmes in 1841.
In 1850, he was elected to the Académie de Nîmes, becoming its president in 1861.
Jules Salles exhibited successfully in several French cities and donated his last works to Nîmes in 1900. He died on December 30, 1900, leaving 10,000 francs to the Académie de Nîmes, where he is buried. An Académie prize bears his name, although it is no longer awarded.
