NOTICE
A French artist born in 1888, Henri Jean Pontoy was an Orientalist painter of the first half of the 20th century. A pupil of Luc-Olivier Merson, he exhibited at various Salons before obtaining a travel grant from the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français in 1926. He moved to North Africa, particularly Tunisia and Morocco, and met Jacques Majorelle in Ouarzazate. A professor in Fez and winner of several prizes, including that of the city of Algiers in 1933, from 1947 he travelled to sub-Saharan Africa with his friend Majorelle, notably Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire.
