Large deep dish in majolica with polychrome decoration of the left profile of a man, representing Julius Caesar, wearing a pointed cap accompanied by a banner bearing the inscription GLVLICESAR / OP; wing decorated with imbricated scales; reverse with spiral motifs.
Deruta, circa 1520/1540
Diameter: 40 cm
In a 19th-century carved and gilded wood frame bearing an old collector's label
Total diameter: 59.2 cm
This profile of a man framed in blue, sometimes helmeted or turbaned, showing a fierce expression with a strongly emphasized eyebrow, is often found in Deruta's work from the first quarter of the 16th century. Usually blue with metallic gold highlights, these dishes are sometimes in polychrome earthenware, as shown here. However, the decoration on the wing, usually compartmentalized, is particularly original, with its interweaving of orange, blue, yellow and green scales.
(small stains, slight wear and chips).
