Ochsenbrunner, Thomas. Historia illust. Romanorum a Iano usq. ad captam a Gotthis urbem iampridem. Rome, Etienne Guillery, 1510. In 4° (201 x 142 mm); [30] papers. 1 full-page woodcut illustration, 75 woodcut vignettes in text, 1 page of text in elaborate woodcut frame, within slipcase (halo to lower corner of first few papers, stain to title page, other minor defects). Later binding in full semi-flexed vellum made from an antiphonary manuscript.
Postillated specimen of this rare cinquecentine with the more German than Roman illustrations that were originally made for Johann Besicken's first edition of 1494. A work designed for pilgrims and visitors to the Holy City, it describes and traces the history of the city from its origins and through its kings to Theodosius, supporting the description with beautiful woodcuts and portraits. The full-page woodcut depicts Romulus under an oak tree, surrounded by Roman and Empire symbols. Lot sold in 2018 at Sotheby's, The Sergio Rossetti Library.
