Tasso, Torquato. La Gerusalemme liberta. Venice, Giambattista Albrizzi, 1745. In 2nd (440 x 305 mm); [24], 253 [but 255], [1] papers. Eyelet, allegorical antiporta with author's portrait within medallion, frontispiece in red and black lettering, portrait of Maria Theresa, 20 plates outside text within elegant phytomorphic border, the subjects of individual cantos within figured frame, 20 culs de lampe including some full-page, double portrait of Albrizzi and Piazzetta at end of volume (restored tear to penultimate paper, some minor staining.) Early 19th-century binding in green half morocco with corners, friezes and title in gilt on spine (small defects to covers). First edition in second printing, containing the Catalogue of Associates and portrait of the Empress as a young woman. Morazzoni: "It is apt to consider the most beautiful illustrated book, the GerusalemmeLiberataby Piazzetta. Piazzetta proceeds from miracle to miracle -- gives a bold proportion and transforms vignettes into the first real decorative etchings, which occupy a full-page."
