In 4° (295 x 230 mm); 5 tomes in 4 volumes; [16], XLVIII, CCCCVIII; CCCCXIII, [1]; CCCCLII, [4], 103, [1]; XII, 408; [4], 264, LXXXIV, [2] pages. 115 engraved plates including 2 figured frontispieces, portrait of Elisabeth Petrowna, copper-engraved dedicatory plate, portrait ofDante, 2 plates with coins and the poet's monument, plan of the Inferno, folded family tree, full-page headers and plates at the beginning of each canto, copper-engraved endpapers and typographical friezes (restoration to the white margin of one plate and to the title page of the third volume, a few stains, other small defects and a few spots). Coeval burgundy morocco binding at arms of Francis Palmer, double threading to the plates, phytomorphic friezes, gilt cuts, nailing à dentelles, gilt title to spine (delicate restoration to hinges, small faults and defects to headpieces and hinges). Ex libris by Palmer and L'Olivette.
Famous edition profusely illustrated by the magnificent plates engraved by, among others, Giampiccoli, Magnini, Rizzi, and Bartolomeo Crivelli. Dedicated to Empress Elizabeth of Russia and published with the help of over 350 subscribers, the work was the first Comedy to be newly illustrated since the sixteenth century.
