Sonnet originally published in the Revue des deux mondes on January 1, 1888, integrated in 1893 by José-Maria de Heredia in his collection Les Trophées.
José-Maria de Heredia's original title was "Le vieux soldat", later crossed out and corrected.

... Take the quiver too. Your eye seems to seek
In their leather sheaths the archer's weapons,
The arrows that the wind of battle scatters;
It's empty. Do you think I've lost my features?
On the field of Marathon you would find them,
