North India Quran, 18th century
Arabic manuscript on ivory paper, calligraphed in naskh, in black ink on 11 lines per page, sura titles in red ink, verse separations marked by gold circles surrounded by black, accompanied by two types of marginal illumination in gold and blue, one forming a radiating rosette, the other a disk surrounded by arabesques. The introductory double page and the two final double pages feature the same frontispiece decoration with polychrome margins. Six double pages are decorated with floral scroll margins.
Bound in 1/2 green morocco, title, gilt fillets and irons on smooth spine: Quran majid, the shahada and the name of the prophet.
