Faenza vase, Emiliano Capra known as "Saladino" (attr.), c. 1560-1570. Majolica. Height 35.5 cm. Conservation: very good@@@ restoration to rim of base ring@@@ insignificant chipping to upper rim Vase with globular body with small, slightly flared foot and mouth with high cylindrical collar and everted rim. On the frontal area, within a medallion, is a bust of a man, with a knotted chlamys on his left shoulder and wearing oriental headgear. On the collar is painted a running branch of leaves and toward the foot a band with braid. On the body, around the medagion, are arranged "trophies" of arms that include a tablet on which is inscribed the abbreviated Latin epigraph "S. P./ Q. R". Painted in orange, blue and yellow The work is part of the broad class of Faenza majolica that developed alongside the "grotesque," during the first half of the 16th century, known as "trophies." Its globular shape is among the most commonly used for apothecary pottery, of which there are references in the Faenza Museum, but innumerable would be the examples to be cited of this type of color and sumptuous workmanship, scattered in the most important public and private collections in the world. The attribution to Faenza is supported through works marked "Faenza" and with certain dates already around and beyond the middle of the century, and from numerous finds recovered from urban sites, marked by the same wide "trophies," that is, with emphasized panoplies Finally, another aspect that makes this work interesting is the stylistic aspect of the bust of a character painted in the center of the medallion. In fact, it manifests the peculiar characters in the manner of Emiliano Capra, known as "Saladino," i.e., marked outline, decisive shading in the face, polychromy with sharp and effective contrasts, etc., which we also find in the vases of a monumental pharmaceutical set, executed by the Faenza master for Giovan Battista Castrucci in 15691 1RAVANELLI GUIDOTTI C., Thesaurus of works of the Faenza tradition, Faenza 1998, pp. 392-401
