Boccia Palermo, dated 1604 Majolica. Height 32.2 cm. Conservation: very good@@@ small chipping to edges@@ insignificant felting to neck. Globular apothecary jar with a large medallion, bordered by an ovular frame, enclosing the figure of a saint, perhaps St. Julius with two of his attributes, the mason's square and the book. Below the medallion is a trophy band with two folders, one with the initials "SPQP" and the other with the date "1604." Several other decorative bands complete the foot and neck. On the rest of the surface foliate vines in diluted blue, yellow, and ochre on a blue ground. For vases with similarities to ours see for example: the one preserved at the Museum of Ceramics in Caltagirone, depicting Saint Catherine and decorated with trophies, published in A.Ragona, Ceramica siciliana d'arte, Bologna 1987, p. 68@@@ or those in A.Ragona, La maiolica siciliana, Palermo 1975, nn. 98-101
