Karl von Kratzer, (* Vienna 9. 2. 1827 † Vienna, 21. 2. 1903) came from a merchant family ennobled in 1792 and initially painted as a hobby, but then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1853 and with his friend A. v. Pettenkofen (with whom he worked in Hungary) from 1855 - 1860 he studied in Paris under J. Coignet. He traveled to England, Holland, Germany and Italy and became a member of the Künstlerhaus in 1861, where he was represented in exhibitions until 1897. His works are often very similar to Pettenkofen's paintings, which creates confusion. He painted landscape and genre, but also animal paintings and portraits.
