[CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) English archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. An interesting A.L.S. by a librarian and committee member of the Savile Club, two pages, 8vo, Brook Street, London, 18th October 1933, to Howard Carter ( ´Dear Sir´), on the printed stationery of the Savile Club, thanking Carter ´most heartily for your magnificent response to the appeal on behalf of the library´ and continuing ´Your three volumes on the Tomb of Tut.Ankh.Amen have just arrived and it is now my privilege to catalogue them. Today there has also arrived a complete set of Compton Mackenzie´s works, and perhaps you will allow me to give vent to my own personal feelings of gratification at such generous replies to my efforts to build up a memorial of the Savile Club which will be a source of such pride for the present and future generations. The Savile Club is of course known to be a home of literary giants, but until a special collection of the works of members has been made, not even the members themselves are aware of the enormous contribution they have collectively made to the literature of the world´, and concluding by remarking ´Your books will be left on a table of the morning room for a few weeks for the immediate delectation of members.....´ About EX
