CARTER HOWARD: (1874-1939) English archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. Autograph Letter, unsigned, one page, small 8vo, n.p., n.d. (October 1935), to Eustache de Lorey. The letter, written in pencil on feint ruled notepaper, is Carter´s retained draft in which he apologises for the delay in replying to Lorey´s letter and continues ´The figures don´t yet belong to me and I am waiting to find out what is the lowest figure they can be obtained. In the meantime I am having photos made and will let you have copies´, further adding that at present his movements with regard to going to Egypt are not fixed as yet, but that he will let Lorey know in due time. Together with Eustache de Lorey (1875-1953) French diplomat, archaeologist, collector and historian of Islamic art who was the director of the French Institute of Archaeology and Muslim Art at Damascus 1922-30. A.L.S., Eustache de Lorey, one page, small 4to, Paris, 4th October 1935, to Howard Carter, being the letter to which Carter´s draft relates. Lorey states that he hopes that his letter had reached Carter safely and continues ´Excuse me if I show myself anxious to know your answer about its contents, and also to be informed in time of the date of your coming to Paris, on your way to Egypt´. Two identical small pinholes and rust stains to the upper left corner of each letter, demonstrating that they were originally pinned together. About VG, 2
