Many silversmiths settled in the vicinity of Celle, a town in Lower Saxony and residence of the House of Brunswick-Luneburg from 1433 to 1705.
Goldsmiths worked for the court, the church and wealthy clients from the nobility and bourgeoisie. After the economic downturn triggered in 1705 by the death of Duke Georg Wilhelm (1624-1705), the Celle residence was dissolved and transferred to Hanover.
It lost some of its importance and splendor, but the silversmiths continued to make high-quality pieces for the local nobility and the Hanover court, as our soup tureen testifies.
The Résidence du Château de Celle museum houses a rich collection of goldsmith's work, including several pieces by the silversmith Carl Georg Brenner, including an important four-light centerpiece.
Provenance | Collection Toulonnaise, according to tradition and an article published in the Fiigaro in 1977 by Yves Dentan, the writer Goethe gave it to Charlotte Buff, the heroine of his "Werther", when she married Jean-Christien Kestner on April 4, 1773. This article was published a few days before the piece was auctioned in Paris. The complete chronicle is available on request.
