SYRIAN TABLETTE in carved wood with a top decorated with four ceramic tiles
Late 16th-century fleuron decoration
The four tiles with ceramic variations are painted in blue on a white or cream background.
Diagonal fleurons formed by palmettes in an arabesque composition with composite flowers.
Dim. tiles 18 x 18 cm

This decoration is typical of the tiles executed for the restoration of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem in the mid-16th century by Sultan Suleiman. It became the model for other series in Damascus and Aleppo. See the recent study by A.
