LACQUER ON PANEL with polychrome decoration in shades of red, brown and sprinkled with gold of a village scene in luxuriant vegetation including flamboyant trees, coconut palms, bamboo and banana trees.
Signed lower left with seal and artist's name Duc Cuong
Annotated on the back "Village tonkinois" Composition by F. de Balmann Pham Duc Cuong / Execution by Pham Duc Cuong, lacquer artist, Hanoi, January 1945.

NB: Pham Duc Cuong was a lacquer professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Industriels, and the author of a book on lacquering techniques, which would have been useful to many fine arts students.
