DENIS MAURICE: (1870-1943) French painter whose theories contributed to the foundations of cubism, fauvism and abstract art. A.L.S., Maurice Denis, one page (folding letter card), 8vo, n.p., 20th March n.y. (1927), to Gabriel Thomas, in French. Denis writes regarding two matters that he had previously forgotten, firstly congratulating Thomas on their lovely preface to Miss. Germain's catalogue, 'Vous avez un brin de plume que j'apprecie. Bravo!' (Translation: 'You have a bit of a quill that I appreciate. Bravo!') and secondly suggesting that plans for a lunch Thomas had organised for Saturday should be altered, explaining that 'Beltrand fait une conference a 2h a Notre Dame. Et encore, sur l'imagerie religieuse! Donc impossible d'y manquer; et votre dejeuner Bisson doit etre a mon grand regret, sacrifie a la conference du bon Jacques, que je tacherais beaucoup, en n'y allant pas' (Translation: 'Beltrand is giving a lecture at 2 o'clock at Notre Dame. And again, on religious imagery! So it is impossible to miss it; and your Bisson lunch must, to my great regret, be sacrificed to the conference of the good Jacques, which I would miss very much, by not going'). Hand addressed by Denis to the verso. Two lengthy, neat splits to the left and right edges of the central fold, only very slightly affecting a few words of text, G Gabriel Thomas (1854-1932) French financier, a promoter of the Musée Grévin and its reconfiguration in 1900, the Eiffel Tower and the construction of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Jacques Beltrand (1874-1977) French engraver. Following the end of World War I Denis had founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacre (Studios of Sacred Art) and worked on decorating the interiors of churches as well as striving for a revival of religious art.
