GREENE GRAHAM: (1904-1991) English novelist. An interesting T.L.S., Graham Greene, one page, 4to, Albany, London, 4th May 1956, to Tadeusz Marek. Greene informs his correspondent that the Polish press were not quite accurate about Greene´s articles in the Sunday Times and explains that the newspaper had asked him to do one article, which he completed, ´and they then divided it into two parts and there is no question of stopping anything that I wrote. Neither the Roman Curea nor the Communist Party have any influence on the English press!´. Greene also grants his permission to Marek for them to go ahead with a translation of The Living Room, although asks that they make contact with Greene´s agent to arrange terms ( ´I will ask him to give any terms his special consideration´) and further discusses other plans, ´The Quiet American is being made into a film by an American company so I don´t think one should discuss any dramatisation at the present time. All dramatic rights are out of my hands. My second play still hangs fire because I want to re-write the second act and I don´t see any chance of getting down to it before the summer´, continuing to express his desire that Marek obtains his passport to Berlin and that he will also be able to visit England ´and that I shall be able to return the hospitality I received from you in Stalinogrod´ , mentioning that Dobraczynski had sent a copy of his essays on the Catholic School ( ´but of course I cannot read them´) and concluding by making a reference to his daughter, Lucy Caroline, ´I am just off to Canada where my daughter is becoming an immigrant and I hope is going to breed a good herd of Herefordshire cattle. It is a great thing having space around one ´ . Accompanied by the original envelope. VG
